I have been involved in counselling individual pupils, setting up a peer counselling scheme and running a therapy group for trainee teachers to process difficult situations they encountered in school.

I have actively used the key ideas of Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy in all aspects of my work. This includes workshops for staff on Transactional Analysis as part of a programme of “What makes Inspirational Teaching?” and for students on using Transactional Analysis in their own teaching in terms of behaviour management and pastoral care.

My Master’s dissertation focused on Stress in Teaching using Transactional Analysis to explore key issues around personality and patterns of behaviour.

I was a teacher for 19 years and a teacher trainer for 10 years.
    During that time I

  • was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship (2007)

  • delivered sessions as part of a course for staff called "What is inspirational teaching?"

  • presented at a Learning and Teaching conference on "Support for stressed out trainee teachers on placement" and "Effective Affective Education""

  • presented professional development sessions to the Institute of Education staff on
"An Exploration of Learning Styles" and "Developing excellence in teaching in Higher Education"

  • made a video recording for a University web site aimed at new and experienced lecturers called "What makes a successful seminar?".

I have co-written a chapter called "Emotional Intelligence and Developing and Maintaining Relationships" for a book which was published on 18th June 2010
